So, a couple of weeks ago, we filmed a performance by Tracey’s high school band. They were playing a song called “Sweet Georgia Brown”, which some of you may know as the theme song for the Harlem Globetrotters. It was a catchy tune. We knew that the Globetrotters were coming to Dubai to perform at Expo, so Tracey had the idea that we should send the video to the Globetrotters, themselves, in the hopes that, maybe, they would send someone down to visit the school. She didn’t know, exactly, where to send the video, so she just sent it to the “info@harlemglobetrotters” email on their website.
Lo and behold, they saw it, and within twenty-four hours, the globetrotters had contacted the US Embassy here in Abu Dhabi (the sponsors of the event) and told them that Tracey’s band HAD to play at the Globetrotters event in Abu Dhabi (which hadn’t even been announced yet). After a couple of phone calls, it was all worked out, so on Sunday, October 31st, Tracey’s band is going to be playing at the halftime festivities of the Globetrotters show. It’s all very exciting!
Here’s a clip of her band practicing the song…
On the complete opposite spectrum of talent, here’s a short film I made…
Friday mornings are Starbucks days.
I don’t drink coffee and I try to shy away from caffeine as much as possible, but I leave Friday mornings open for an indulgent treat. So, on Fridays, we get Starbucks delivered, where I have a 9000 calorie mocha frappuccino and a blueberry muffin. It’s something for me to look forward to when, as I get older, I am no longer allowed to consume calories in as large of quantities as I’m used to.
When I walked outside, I realized that the weather has changed. Since April, Abu Dhabi has been a hellscape of heat. But its around this part of the year that I begin to realize that this place isn’t so bad after all. There was a gentle breeze blowing and the temperature was absolutely perfect. So, while all you yahoos are expecting your first spits of snow and the leaves on your trees turn from a glorious orange into a lifeless brown (before disappearing altogether), know that I am walking around in shorts and a t-shirt, enjoying life in the desert.
So, what do I have to say today? Not a whole lot.
This afternoon, we are going to see Last Night in Soho.
It’s always an event when a new Edgar Wright film makes an appearance, so I’m excited to see this one in the theaters. The only thing that I know about the movie is what I’ve seen in this trailer, as I have given myself a media blackout on it. I love going into movies without knowing a single thing about them. If it’s a movie that I know I will want to see, then I don’t read anything about it or watch any trailers that might spoil things. And Edgar Wright has specifically said that he doesn’t want any of the secrets about the movie spilled. After consulting with Mr. Wright, I have decided that he is probably correct, so I will engage in nothing.
That’s all I’ve got for today! I’ll give you a review of the film next week. Maybe. Enjoy your weekend…
